Indira Gandhi Poster
Indira Gandhi was born on 19th November, 1917 in Anand Bhavan of Allahabad. Her father's name was Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru and mother's name was Kamala Nehru. Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru was the first prime minister of India. Her full name was Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi. Nehru ji went to jail many times during the freedom movement. In jail, he was worried about Indira Gandhi. He kept writing letters to her from jail and through them gave her various kinds of information about Indian history, science.

Jawaharlal Nehru's letters gave good guidance to her. These were the letters which arouses the feelings of love for country, generosity and human love in the heart of Indira Gandhi. When Nehru was at home, he used to tell stories of great men to his daughter. One day Mahatma Gandhi suggested to him that he should send her to Poona for studies. Nehru ji implemented his suggestion and sent her Poona. Here she studied for three years. After this she went to Shantiniketan for further studies.

A few days later, she got news of her mother's illness. At that time her mother was being treated in Switzerland. Indira Gandhi left the Santiniketan and moved to Switzerland. But there, in 1936, her mother died. After recovering from this shock, Nehru enrolled Indira for admission in Oxford University and she studied history there.

She was married to Feroze Gandhi on 26th March, 1942. They had two children- Rajiv Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi.

Those days Anand Bhavan was a major center for political activities. There was a huge gathering of all the big leaders of the country there. In this environment, Indira Gandhi got a golden opportunity to revive her political talent. She started handing over the work of her father. She was getting new experiences from day to day. These experiences gave her the distinction of becoming India's First Woman Prime Minister. In 1956, she was appointed as the president of Congress Party. A big tragedy came in her life in 1960 when Feroze Gandhi died.

After the passing away of her father in 1964, she joined the Union Cabinet of the Lal Bahadur Shastri as a Minister of Information and Broadcasting. Lal Bahadur Shastri passed away in Tashkent on 11 January, 1966 due to heart attack. At that time the whole country was passing through a crisis. On 24th January 1966, Indira Gandhi took the oath as prime minister of India.

She had a great hobby of playing with threats. She tried hard to attain her goal without much fear of her life. Nationalization of banks was also a bold step taken by Indira Gandhi. Thousands of Pakistani soldiers were detained during the India-Pakistan war in 1971. Even in this war, Pakistan was badly hit. After that war, a new country was born as Bangladesh.

She had the inefficient ability to fight in hard and difficult situations. The history of the world is a testimony to the fact that the way Indira Gandhi ruled in India, so far no women of any country have ruled. She got death threats on the phone many times but they had no effect on her. At that time Indira Gandhi said that "If I get killed then violence will be in the killer's mind and action - not in my death. Any power of the world, no matter how big, I can never lose my love for the countrymen".

Everybody knows the progress of the country during her regime. She used to fight for the uplift of the poor. But some people were plotting to murder her. On October 31, 1984 they killed her. This murder was done by those security guards whom she considered to be a member of her family. She never thought in the dream that her security guards would become enemies of her life. Indira Gandhi is not among us but the sympathy of the countrymen towards her family remains.

In 1972, she was honored with the highest civilian award of the Republic of India Bharat Ratna.
