India's first Prime
Minister Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru was born on 14th November, 1889 in
Allahabad city of Uttar Pradesh. His father Pt. Motilal Nehru was a well known
advocate of his time. His mother’s name was Swaruprani Thussu. They had no
shortage of wealth. Due to being born in a thriving family, he did not face any
type of problem. He was the only son of his parents that's why he got great
affection from his parents.
Motilal ji wanted
that the influence of the people of the old settlement did not affect his son.
That's why he rented a bungalow and left the old settlement and started living
in that bungalow. He kept a lot of attention for the future of his son. To
teach Jawahar, he appointed a teacher named Brooks. His educational development
was under the supervision of Brooks. He inspired Jawahar to learn English. He
also created new curiosity for science in his heart.
In 1905, he was
admitted to the famous Harrow School in London. When he came here, he felt
lonely. He told his father through the letter that I do not like it here. Motilal
ji noticed his point of view and in 1907 he enrolled Jawahar in Cambridge College. At that time Jawaharlal Nehru
was only 18 years old. After completing his
education from Cambridge, he studied law. After that he came to India as a
barrister. Here he started advocating. In those days the Indian leaders were
fully enthusiastic about the freedom in the whole country. On seeing this
environment, he aroused with the feeling of patriotism and got involved in
independence movement. In 1916, he met Mahatma Gandhi for the first time. In
the first meeting Gandhi had thought that Jawaharlal would prove to be very
precious for the India. Later he addressed him as 'Jawahar of India'.
In 1906, Jawahar was
married to Kamala Kaul, daughter of a famous businessman from Delhi. India
knows the important role played by the Nehru family in the independence of
India. Jawaharlal Nehru had to go to jail several times. When India became
independent, he became the first Prime Minister of India. He initiated the
five-year plans in the country. This led to the beginning of a new era in
India. He introduced large public utilities, big dams, new factories and many
public institutions in India under his plans. As Prime Minister, he carried
India's honor abroad to new heights. He said that there should be a sense of
cooperation in all the countries of the world.
He was favored for peace
of the world. He provided new directions in the field of science and technology
to India. He had always tried to take the country to the height. His effort
continued for the lifetime. He was very fearless and courageous. He had a habit
of playing with dangers. No power in the world could deter him from his
determination. He used to be very interested in sports too. He was also a great
writer and composed many famous books like “The Discovery of India”, “Glimpses
of World History”, “Letters from a father to his Daughter” etc.
In 1955 he was
awarded with Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award of the Republic of India.
He lived among us for almost 75 years. He left world on 27th May, 1964. Today he is immortal in everyone’s heart even though he is not among us. He is remembered as a peace envoy and creator of modern India and we will keep these memories even further.
There is no end to the
adventures that we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.
