Rajiv Gandhi was born on 20 August,1944 in a nursing home in Mumbai. His father's name was Feroze Gandhi and mother's name was Indira Gandhi. Rajiv was their eldest son. Jawaharlal Nehru, his maternal grandfather used to call him Rajiv Ratna. When Jawaharlal Nehru became the first Prime Minister of India in 1966, his daughter Indira Gandhi took the children to Delhi from Mumbai because there was no one to take care of her father at that time.
He was married to Sonia Maino on 25 February,1968. After marriage, Sonia Maino started to be known as Sonia Gandhi. They had two children- Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi vandra.
In 1980, he quit his job and entered in politics. He won from the Amethi Loksabha constituency with huge votes in 1981. 31st October,1984 proved to be a mountain of trouble for him. On that day the first women Prime Minister and Rajiv Gandhi's mother Mrs. Indira Gandhi was brutally murdered by two of her bodyguards. This was a tremendous trauma for the entire country. Communal riots broke out in the country. The people were shedding tears in the memory of Indira Gandhi.
On the same day, Rajiv Gandhi was elected the leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party and took oath as the prime minister and oath of secrecy.
He was very patience by his nature. He easily calm down the communal riots spread all over the country. He ruled as fearless as his mother. To settle the Punjab problem, he made an agreement with Harchand Singh Longowal. After this, terrorists spread terror to the whole country by killing Harchand Singh. Despite this, Rajiv remained firm on this agreement. No power in the world could deter him from his goal.
Rajiv was a living example of love and brotherhood. He tried to strengthen India's unity and integrity till the death. To solve the problem of Assam, he made an agreement with Prafulla Kumar Mahanta. His effort was partially successful. He was a favored choice for peace. In 1987, he sent his peace army under an agreement in Sri Lanka. After this, he sent his troops to suppress the rebellion of the revolt in the Maldives.
Missiles like Prithvi and Agni were developed during his reign. He started the Jawahar Rozgar Yojna to develop the villages. Through the Nehru Rozgar Yojna, he tried to develop the cities. He wanted to improve relations with neighboring countries. But his efforts to restore peace in Sri Lanka proved to be an enemy of his life. He died on 21st May, 1991 in a public meeting in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu. On 6th July,1991 he was awarded posthumously "Bharat Ratna".
